Overcoming mental health barriers to employment
How Sefton@Work supported Mike
Bootle Job Centre referred Mike, age 28, to Sefton@Work to help him find a job. Mike was experiencing mental health challenges that were preventing him from advancing in his career. These issues began when he lost an apprenticeship that he started at 18 years old and have persisted since. During his initial consultations, Sefton@Work noticed Mike's excitement and eagerness to work. Through subsequent sessions, they gained a deeper understanding of his background.
Mike admitted that his mental health was poor and impacting various aspects of his life, but he wasn't seeking help from his GP. After receiving encouragement from Sefton@Work, he gathered the courage to book an appointment to discuss his situation. His GP provided a range of options and services, but Mike decided that counselling was the most effective strategy for him.
After attending multiple counselling sessions, Mike felt confident enough to explore his job options. Sefton@Work assisted him in applying for various customer service vacancies and preparing for interviews. Despite his best efforts, he was unsuccessful in securing a position. Upon reviewing his CV, Sefton@Work discovered a skills gap and recommended several online courses to enhance his skill set.
These courses not only demonstrate his willingness to learn and take on new challenges but also make him a more attractive candidate to potential employers.
Upon recognising a high incidence of mental health issues among young people accessing support at Sefton@Work, a specialised course was sought out to help. The Pact Mantality programme, focused on men's health and employability, was identified as the perfect solution. Mike, who was interested in improving his overall well-being, took part in the course and found it incredibly helpful. He learned about mindfulness, self-awareness, and the importance of physical, mental and emotional health. The course also emphasised building confidence and resilience, overcoming limitations, and moving towards employment. Mike's self-assurance has increased, and his mental health has been steadily improving.
Sefton@Work continues to work closely with Mike and is optimistic about his ability to find sustainable employment in the near future.
